Team 2015/16

Introduction

A record number of 112 teams from all over the world participated in the ICC Moot Court Competition 2016. The University of Passau's team was made up by five senior students intensely pursuing their specification interests in criminal and international law.

Julia Klaus

Julia, born 1994, could already gather "trial experience" as a member of Landshut's teen court during her school days. At the same time, she frequently represented her secondary school in the youth county council Dingolfing-Landau. Hence she is used to speaking in front of a large audience.

After passing her Abitur and, shortly afterwards, the Bavarian elite examination in 2012, Julia commenced her studies at the EBS University for Economy and Law in Wiesbaden. As an eXebs fellow she was supported by the university's alumni club. For diverging specification interests, she moved to Passau after two terms.

Here, Julia participated in the Criminal Law Moot Court organized by ELSA Passau during the summer term 2014. Her passion for mooting was awakened while acting as a defence lawyer there.

Julia spent the winter term 2014/15 at St Catherine's College in Oxford to study Criminal Law in a common law system as well as Public International Law in depth. During the summer term 2015, she participated in the International Criminal Law Summer School of Leiden University in The hague and brought home lots of valuable insights and experiences.

Julia's major is Criminal Law and Internationals and, next to her main studies, she is currently doing the Certificate of Studies in European, Comparative and International Law (CECIL).

"Pleading in front of the court and putting your shoulder to the wheel for your client is an absolutely electrifying feeling. I'm looking forward to reviving it in The Hague."

Carolin Toni

Carolin is studying law in her 7th term and her specification area is Criminal Justice.

She could gather her first mooting experience during the ELSA Criminal Law Moot Court at the District Court of Passau in 2014, where she represented the public prosecutor's office. There, her interest in Criminal Law, especially in procedures, rose.

Motivated by that moot court and her interest in foreign languages, Carolin decided to continue mooting in the area of International Criminal Law and to join the University of Passau's first team for the ICC Moot Court Competition in The Hague.

After her Abitur, Carolin visited a language school in Valencia for five months with the aim to ameliorate her Spanish knowledge. Afterwards, she did her law-specific foreign language training in Spanish and in English, which she successfully completed in 2014.

Another one of her various interests is voluntary work in residences for elderly people, specifically the care of dementia patients.

"I'm especially curious about the induction into a previously unknown area of the law, the absorption of legal language abilities as well as the practical dealing with the international criminal law case."

Habibe Coban

Habibe is studying law in her 7th semester now and chose Criminal Justice as her specialization area.

A talent promotion made her graduation from school after 12 years possible. At school, she namely studied Latin, French and Spanish. In addition, she is fluent in Turkish.

Habibe is in the Bavarian executive committee of the society "Union Europäisch-Türkischer Demokraten e.V. Youth" (Union of European Turkish Democrats) and she is the chairwoman of the Muslim Students' Union Passau, which she co-founded.

In search of a juridical challenge and joined with her interest in Criminal Law, Habibe decided to enter into Passau's ICC Team.

"While studying law, it occurred to me that the punishment of heinous human rights violations is not to be taken for granted. So I am especially lucky to gather my first mooting experiences in the context of the ICC Moot Court Competition."

Alica Krause

Alica, born 1994, comes from the county Gifhorn, Lower Saxony. In her early youth, she repeatedly participated in "The Language Experience" at Lake Tankumsee, a German-American language camp, where she later acted as an instructor, too. The social competence and abilities gained there were subsequently expanded by her when she cared for puerile ADHD patients as a team leader in a specific holiday camp.

To further develop her language skills, Alica decided to spend half a school year in Napier, New Zealand. Enriched by numerous experiences and with a newly inflamed interest for everything international, she completed a two week internship as administrative worker at the YMCA Fairthorne Group in England. In 2014, she taught English and Sports at an Indian school for one week.

After successfully graduating from school in 2013, Alica chose to begin her legal studies in Passau because of the university's internationality. By now, she has already completed two one month internships at a public prosecutor's office and at a law office. She chose Criminal Law and Internationals for her major studies.

"Both Criminal Law and Public International Law are the areas in which I'm deeply interested! The ICC Moot Court seems perfect to unite both and plunge deeply into International Criminal Law!"
