For Students
Study programs
The Chair supervises two degree programmes that combine legal content with practical issues of digitalization::
- The four-year (8 semesters, 240 ECTS-LP) Bachelor's programme "LL.B. Legal Tech" can be started in addition to or instead of the state examination course. It combines the obligatory content of the state examination degree ("Zwischenprüfung" and "Hauptstudium") with courses in business informatics. The focus lies not on the tools of the trade, such as programming or database design, but on the entrepreneurial perspective of transformation: students are trained to accompany and shape transformation processes through courses such as change management.
- The one-year (2 semesters, 60 ECTS-LP) Master's programme "LL.M. Rechtsinformatik" can be started after the state examination or after the Bachelor's degree in Legal Tech; other degrees are also sufficient, provided that a total of 240 ECTS have been obtained (e.g. through a three-year - 6 semesters, 180 ECTS-LP - Bachelor's degree and additional legal professional experience or one year of further training after this degree). The content of the course focuses on the practical implementation of the digitalisation of legal activities (design of user interfaces, AI systems, databases).

Specialisations
The Chair is responsible for four Specialisations:
- Specialisation 9 - Private commercial law: Private commercial law is a subject with which the average person is likely to encounter on a daily basis, albeit often without realising it. It deals with the rules governing the market behaviour of companies (fair trading law), the intellectual property rights to which they are entitled (trademarks, patents, copyrights, etc.) and secrets, as well as the prohibition of agreements restricting competition and the regulation of companies with market power (antitrust law). Private commercial law is also associated with tort law, general law of obligations and credit protection law, and it delves more profoundly into commercial law and civil procedure law. In this respect, the Specialisation is directly related to the content of the First State Examination in Law. Private commercial law is a highly attractive field for a future career, especially for the larger law firms operating throughout Germany or even worldwide, which focus on this area.
- Specialisation 10 - Public and private commercial law: Businesses operating within a market are subject to restrictions imposed by both government and private law, the boundaries of which are often unclear. This Specialisation addresses the fundamental questions that arise in this area of practice, without providing detailed case law examples or discussing specific issues. It is relevant to both constitutional and administrative law courses, as well as core civil law areas such as tort law and credit protection law, and exam-relevant secondary areas including commercial law and civil procedure law. In professional practice, commercial law skills are essential for large international law firms and for advising small and medium-sized enterprises.
- Specialisation 24 - Digital economy: The 21st century is characterised by a data-driven economy, driven by global digital networking, which naturally gives rise to a range of legal issues. These issues are not only covered in the media on a daily basis, but are also the focus of numerous legal challenges. These include accusations of market abuse by large digital corporations (e.g. Meta, Amazon, Alphabet), the creation of profits from personal and non-personal data (including telemetry), and the possibilities of manipulating end consumer behaviour. The digital economy focus area provides an introduction to these topics, creating the basis for active participation in this exciting area. This Specialisation builds on numerous lectures from the compulsory subject area and expands on them, for example in the areas of tort law, property law, credit security law and general law of obligations..
- Specialisation 26 - Legal Tech: The Specialisation "Legal Tech" provides an introduction to the modern and future professional life of legal advice, including the following topics: Which activities can be automated, and how must systems be designed so that lawyers can use them, but also critically review them? What potential do algorithms and database structures have in everyday professional life? At what point does an online service cross the line into a legal service requiring a license, and what are the requirements, e.g. in terms of remuneration, advertising or documentation? This Specialisation equips participants with the essential skills to navigate the challenges of legal services in the 21st century, even without prior technical expertise..
Deadlines for registration to the Specialisations, the seminars and the dates of the oral examinations are set centrally by the Dean of Studies - you can find these on their website.
