The crisis over Catalan independence has attracted much attention in Europe and across the globe. The development, which led to a snap election and the formation of a new regional government in Barcelona, raises questions about national secession and European Union law similar to the ones discussed in the context of Brexit and Scottish independence earlier in this Series.
Professor Carlos Juan Closa Montero is an internationally recognized voice in questions of regionalism, federalism and related aspects of European Union law. He was, inter alia, Deputy Director of the Centro de Estudios Políticos y Constitucionales (attached to the Spanish Deputy Prime Minister’s Office) from 2004 to 2008 and represented Spain on the Venice Commission for Democracy through Law from 2005 to 2009. He is currently affiliated with the Instituto de Políticas y Bienes Públicos (IPP) in Madrid.
Together with Prof. Dr. Jörg Fedtke, Chair of Common Law, he will discuss current issues of a possible separation from Spain. Guest lecture and discussion are held in English and are open to the public. Please vistit our website https://www.jura.uni-passau.de/en/fedtke/crossroads/ for more information.
